Kampala to Lake Mburo by road

Most visitors drive from Kampala. The distance to the park is about 228 km, roughly 3½ hours without stops, city traffic or bad weather. A return trip on the same day therefore means about 7 hours of driving, which leaves little time for a game drive. Most people stay at least one night; compare the options on our Lake Mburo tours from Kampala page.

The road from Kampala runs through Masaka and on towards Mbarara, and the park lies between the two. Coming from Kampala you reach Nshara Gate first and Sanga Gate next. After the gate, park tracks lead to the headquarters at Rwonyo.

Kampala to Mbarara and the park gates

The route and the two gates in order.

Kampala to Masaka

The first stage runs southwest to Masaka, about 130 km. You pass the equator monument at Kayabwe on the way; see the Uganda equator guide. Masaka is a good place for a break; see Masaka.

Nshara Gate

The first gate from Kampala. The turn-off from the main road is about 5 to 9 km from the gate, depending on the junction you use. Follow signs and ask if you are unsure.

Sanga Gate

The second gate, about 13 km from the main road. Ask your accommodation which gate is closer to it.

Inside the park

Stay on the tracks and keep to 40 km/h. Allow extra time between the gate and your camp or lodge, as tracks are slower than the highway. Gates are open from 07:00 to 19:00.

Our pick: a trip with the road transfer included

Pick-up and return are in Kampala or Entebbe in a safari van, so you do not need to organise the drive yourself.

Ways to get there

Compare the main options before you decide.

OptionHow it worksGood to know
Self-driveRent a car in Kampala or Entebbe and drive yourselfPay the vehicle fee and the self-drive fee at the park; avoid night driving
Car with driver or transferArrange a pick-up in Kampala or at the airportAsk for a fixed price and the drive time to your gate
Coach and transferTake a coach on the route Kampala, Masaka, Mbarara, then a pre-arranged transferCheck the current timetable; no direct scheduled bus runs into the park
Charter flight and roadFly a charter to Mbarara, then driveNo direct flight into the park; costs and schedules depend on the charter

For most visitors a car with a driver is the simplest choice: it avoids night driving, and the driver handles the gates. If you like to drive yourself, read the car hire notes below first.

Taxi and transfer from Entebbe airport (EBB)

Entebbe International Airport (EBB) is the main arrival point. The airport is about 40 km from Kampala; the road link is about 42 km and takes around 40 minutes, longer in rush hour. The expressway is quicker, but no transfer time is guaranteed.

An airport guideline for a taxi to Kampala is $40 or UGX 100,000. Yellow airport taxis wait at the arrivals area. Other destinations are negotiable, and there is no fixed price for a transfer from the airport all the way to Lake Mburo, so agree the price and the drive time before you get in. A charter flight to Mbarara followed by a road transfer is possible, but there is no daily scheduled flight to the park.

Car hire and parking

Traffic keeps to the left in Uganda.

Licence

Travellers from Germany need an international driving permit together with the national licence. Check the rule for your own country before you book.

Night driving

Official travel advice asks visitors not to drive outside Kampala at night, and it warns about overland drives in the dark. Plan to reach the park or your lodge before dark.

Fees for your own car

A vehicle fee applies per 24 hours: $40 for a car, $50 for a minibus or pick-up and $150 for a tour vehicle or 4x4 with foreign registration. If you drive without a private guide or UWA ranger, the self-drive fee is $10 per vehicle on top. These are UWA amounts for July 2024 to December 2026.

Which car

There is no general four-wheel-drive rule, but a car fee does not mean every track suits every car. Ask at the gate about conditions, especially after rain.

Parking

Ask at your lodge or gate where to leave the car and whether it costs anything.

Entry rules and what to arrange first

Short notes for 2026.

Visa

The single-entry eVisa for tourists costs $50 and is applied for online beforehand. The East Africa Tourist Visa costs $100 and covers Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda for 90 days of tourist stays; apply in the first country you enter. It is not valid for Tanzania. Some nationalities are exempt, so check your own.

Yellow fever

Since October 2026 the certificate is no longer compulsory on entry according to UK travel advice, but the visa application may still ask for one. Check the current requirement and bring your vaccination certificate if you have one.

Park fees

Pay at the reservation office or the gate; mobile money, card terminals and bank payments are options. See Lake Mburo park fees.

Onward travel

Many travellers continue west to the gorilla parks. Pick a specific sector first, then look at getting to Bwindi.
