Walking safari at Lake Mburo in 2026
A walking safari at Lake Mburo means a guided nature walk, a cycling trip or a night drive. You leave the vehicle and see the savanna at human pace: tracks, termite mounds, birds and the smaller animals you pass in a car. Rangers guide walks around Rwonyo and the salt lick and into the Rubanga forest. Which walks run on your dates is something to ask at the park office, and nothing here is a fixed daily programme.
Each activity is a separate fee in the UWA tariff for July 2024 to December 2026, charged on top of park entry. Check the current amount before you book. The rates are in the table below.

Walking, cycling and night drive fees
Per person, on top of park entry.
| Activity | Foreign non-residents | Foreign residents | East African citizens |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nature walk or birding | $25 | $20 | UGX 20,000 |
| Cycling | $30 | $25 | UGX 30,000 |

For some visitor groups the night drive costs a range of amounts, which the table shows. Check the current figure before you go. For visitors who sleep in the park, the walk and the night drive make a good pair. Park entry is $40 per adult per 24 hours for foreign non-residents. See the park fees page.
Nature walks and birding
Guided on foot.
Rangers lead walks around Rwonyo, the salt lick and into the Rubanga forest. The park counts more than 315 bird species, so a walk with a guide who knows the calls is a good way to see small birds that a car passes. Expect to walk slowly and stop often. Bring water, sun protection, a hat and closed shoes. Take your guide's instructions about animals seriously: buffalo and hippos are the animals that need respect on foot.
Ask the park office about walk times and age limits for children when you book. Do not walk alone away from camp, and do not leave the guide.
Cycling at Lake Mburo
A separate activity with its own fee.
Cycling is a separate activity in the tariff, at $30 per person for foreign non-residents. It does not mean you can ride anywhere you like. Ask the park office which tracks you may use and whether a bicycle is provided or you bring your own. Keep a distance from animals, wear a helmet and carry water.
Night drives: who can join
Only guests who sleep in the park.
The overnight rule
The tariff allows night drives only for guests who stay overnight inside the park. A lodge outside the boundary does not qualify, even if it is close to a gate.
The guide
A UWA guide is required on every night drive.
UWA vehicle
If a UWA vehicle is available, a night drive costs $40 per person for foreign non-residents, charged for at least 3 people.
Where to sleep
The park offers a guesthouse, tents and a dormitory at Rwonyo. Details are on the lodges page.
