Lake Mburo tours from Kampala

Lake Mburo is about 228 km from Kampala, which UWA puts at roughly 3ยฝ hours by road without stops. The drive alone takes about seven hours there and back, before a single game drive. That decides how you choose a tour: a day trip is possible but tiring, a night in or near the park is the usual choice, and many travelers use Lake Mburo as a stopover on the way west.

Tour prices differ in what they include. Some bundle transport, a guide, the park entry and an activity, others cover only the transport. Before you book, check whether the permit and the park fees are in the price, how many hours you spend in the park and where you sleep. The park charges entry, vehicle and activities separately, as the park fees page explains.

Lake Mburo day trip from Kampala

What a single day allows.

On a day trip you leave Kampala early, spend a few hours on a game drive or a boat trip and drive back in the evening. The gates are open from 07:00 to 19:00, and travel advice from several governments warns against driving at night outside Kampala, so an early start matters. A day trip suits a traveler with little time who accepts a short visit. It does not leave room for a walk, a ride or a night drive.

FormatTime in the parkGood for
Day trip from KampalaA few hours between two long drivesA first look at the savanna on a tight schedule
One night at or near the parkAn evening and a morning, or a full dayA game drive and a boat trip without rushing

Stopover on the way westOne afternoon and one morningBreaking the long drive to Bwindi or Queen Elizabeth

For most travelers, one night is a good balance: you arrive in time for an afternoon drive or a boat trip and leave after a morning drive.

Places that break up the drive.

The equator at Kayabwe

The monument stands on the Kampala to Masaka road, 72 km south of Kampala, and consists of two concrete rings that mark the equator. It is a short photo stop.

Masaka

Masaka is a traffic and trade town on the southwest road, about 130 km from Kampala. It suits a meal or a fuel stop. The ferry to Bugala in the Ssese islands leaves from Bukakata, not from Masaka itself.

Uganda tour: Lake Mburo as a stopover

Where it fits on a longer route.

A classic Uganda tour heads west from Kampala. Lake Mburo is the first park on that road, so it often serves as a first or last night before the gorilla forest or the savanna of Queen Elizabeth. For the gorilla stage, Bwindi tours explains the permits and trips. The drive on from Lake Mburo to Bwindi depends on the sector you visit, so check the time for your sector before you plan the day. For the savanna and the Kazinga Channel, see Queen Elizabeth tours.

Multi-day tours of Uganda also exist that combine several parks. In that case, ask how many nights are in Lake Mburo and whether they include the boat trip or the ride.

What to check before you book a tour

The price list does not show everything.

Park fees and permit

Ask whether entry, the vehicle fee and activity fees are included. A boat trip alone is $30 per person, and the vehicle fee for a tour vehicle or 4x4 is $150 for foreign plates.

Where you sleep

A night drive is only possible if you sleep inside the park. Accommodation outside the boundary does not qualify. See lodges and camps.

Pick-up and return time

Ask when you leave Kampala and when you return. A late return means driving in the dark.

Entry rules

The single-entry tourist eVisa costs $50 and the East Africa Tourist Visa $100 for 90 days across Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda. A yellow fever certificate is still requested with the visa application, but since October 2026 it is no longer compulsory on entry according to UK travel advice. Carry the certificate if you have one and check the rule before you fly.
