Mbarara City and Lake Mburo
Mbarara is a city in southwestern Uganda on the main road from Kampala. It received city status on 1 July 2020. Most visitors meet it as a stop before or after Lake Mburo National Park, which lies between Masaka and Mbarara. The city itself is outside the park, so a night in Mbarara is not a night inside the park.
This page covers the city, the Igongo Cultural Centre and how to combine both with a park visit. If your main goal is a game drive, start with our Lake Mburo safari guide and use Mbarara as a base or a stop.

Things to do in Mbarara
The city is a working regional town, not a resort. It suits a half day.
Walk the main street
The main road is busy with motorbike taxis and cars. Cross with care and keep your phone and bag close, as you would in any town centre.
Look at the market
Woven baskets and calabashes are on sale at the market. Prices are negotiated, so ask politely and carry small notes in Ugandan shillings.
Visit the Igongo museum
The cultural centre on the road towards Masaka is the main visit near the city. Details are in the next section.
Meet the cattle country
The surrounding hills are Ankole cattle country. Read about the long-horned herds on our Ankole cattle page.
Our pick: a trip with a stop at Igongo
This two-day trip includes a visit to the Igongo Cultural Centre, plus the equator stop and a game drive at Lake Mburo.
Hand-picked tours, booked through GetYourGuide. Prices are indicative starting prices in US dollars (as of October 2026). Tap a tour for live availability and the current price in your currency.

Igongo Cultural Centre
The Igongo Cultural Centre sits at Biharwe on the Mbarara to Masaka road, about 12 km from the city centre. It is a museum for the cultural and natural heritage of the region, and it runs performance programmes. Its main building shows figures in a palace made of reeds, and traditional thatched huts stand on the grounds.
Entry is about UGX 25,000 to UGX 30,000. Check the current price and the opening hours before you drive out. Because Igongo lies on the highway, it fits a day when you drive to or from the park.

Mbarara in a Lake Mburo trip
Three ways to use the city, depending on your plan.
| Plan | What it looks like | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Stop on the way west | Lunch, cash and a visit to Igongo between the park and your next destination | The distance from Kampala to the park is about 228 km, roughly 3ยฝ hours without stops |
| Base for a few nights | Sleep in the city, drive to a park gate for the day | You pay the park gate fee per day and travel each morning; ask for the current transfer time |
| Overnight in or near the park | Use Mbarara only for supplies | Night drives need an overnight stay inside the park |
For most visitors the stop on the way west is a good fit: it adds the museum and a meal without adding a hotel change. If you want the night drive or an early boat trip, sleep in or near the park; see where to stay.
Onward from Mbarara
Many travellers continue west from here towards the gorilla parks. For that leg, see the guide to getting to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, and pick a specific sector before you plan the drive.

Practical tips for a Mbarara stop
Small things that save time.
Carry shillings
Museum entry and market purchases are priced in Ugandan shillings. Keep small notes for the market and for tips.
Ask before you drive out
Confirm the opening hours of any visit before you leave, especially if you are fitting it between park activities.
Plan the park leg early
Park gates are open from 07:00 to 19:00. Leave Mbarara with enough daylight to reach your gate and your camp, and ask for the current drive time when you book a transfer.
Look for wildlife in the park
The city is not a wildlife stop. Zebras, impalas and other animals are in the park; see Lake Mburo animals and the boat trip.
